French top of the group for World Cup bar spend

France may have been handed a rugby lesson by New Zealand on Saturday night, but according to the latest transaction data from payments processing company Worldpay, fans of ‘Les Bleus’ put in a match-winning performance of their own in the pubs and bars around the Millennium Stadium over Quarter Finals weekend.

According to Worldpay’s analysis of international card spend in Cardiff and Southwest London last weekend, the French outspent the Kiwis by a factor of three in a performance that also saw them pip the Irish to the title of ‘Thirstiest International Fans.’

The biggest surprise of the round came from Argentina, whose travelling supporters also put in an epic performance, spending 45% more in the bars than the traditionally party-loving Australians, who themselves finished bottom of the group behind South Africa’s travelling fans.

Meanwhile landlords and restaurant owners across Cardiff were left celebrating a victory of their own with Sunday seeing a record spend in pubs, bars, restaurants and fast food outlets up 176% compared to an average weekend.

Saturday night’s contest between France and New Zealand at Cardiff prompted the weekend’s second biggest rise in sales with transactions across the hospitality trade up 156% versus the average. By contrast, spending in bars and restaurants around Twickenham during the Scotland vs. Australia match was up just 56% against the average.

“Queuing for the cashpoint outside Twickenham station used to be a rite of passage for any rugby fan, but investment in contactless payment technology by the RFU and other venue owners means visiting fans need no longer fear running out of beer money mid-way through a nail-biter. Ditching cash in favour of contactless is great for pubs and bars as it means they can serve more people in less time. It’s also great news for spectators who are able to spend less time queuing and more time watching the action.”
