Top apps for small business owners
One of the not-so-secret weapons in the armoury of the small business owner is technology. Getting online, for example, can help level the playing field with larger, better resourced rivals and help you expand into new markets. But one aspect of the technology revolution you might have overlooked is the smartphone. As of last summer there were a staggering 1.5 million apps available on Apple’s App Store, and even more (1.6m) on Google Play. But many of us think of them more as throwaway consumer entertainment than genuinely useful business tools.
So Worldpay has done the hard work for you and compiled a list of our favourite apps for the small business. It’s not an exhaustive list, of course, but we’d encourage you to give them a whirl. This ‘best of the best’ rundown should help you in your quest to become more productive, better organised, more collaborative, and financially prudent.
Talon for Twitter: All small business owners should be on Twitter. The next step is selecting the right app to filter out the noise and turn it into a genuinely useful business tool. Talon does this in spades, with a highly customisable and feature-rich user interface.
Evernote: One of the most popular note-taking apps around. It’ll keep all your notes, memos and to-do lists in one place – turning it into a helpful project management tool. What’s more, it syncs easily with the desktop version and allows you to share with other team members. Paid Plus, Premium and Business versions are available on top of the free download.
Google Drive: file back-up and cloud sharing courtesy of Google. Store up to 15GB of content in the cloud for free.
KashFlow: A one-stop-shop for all your small business accounting needs. With features that simplify and automate your invoicing, tax returns, bank feeds, credit control and even payroll.
Wave: It might have launched all the way back in 2010, but Wave is still a favourite for small business owners. It’s a one-stop shop for all your accounting, payroll and invoicing needs.
Expensify: If you or your employees travel a lot, this is the app for you. It simplifies the whole convoluted process of submitting and approving expenses.
Workflow: The key to good time management is all about improving your workflow. Not a particularly sexy topic, but with this app you can excel in. Connect apps and actions together and eradicate all those things in your working life that are just a waste of time.
Remember the Milk: This free task management app also lets you share tasks and lists with others and now syncs with Evernote so there’s no excuses for forgetting anything ever again.
Todoist: To-do list manager with a slick, minimal design. Also lets you co-manage tasks with friends or delegate to colleagues.
Skype: An oldie but a goodie, Skype helps you stay in touch with clients, partners and prospects with free voice and video calls and messaging.
Dropbox: Another well-known app, this time for cloud sync and sharing. Especially useful if you have a dispersed team or frequently travel. A paid Business version has additional functionality.
