Launched in 2014, and located on the second floor of the renowned Afflecks indoor market of diverse shops and traders in the heart of Manchester, England's, Northern Quarter, Make Up Or Break Up (MUOBU) includes the Gay Pride Shop and Festival Glitter.
The business sells a wide variety of pride-related accessories, including flags, badges, lanyards, pins, patches, buntings, greetings cards and more.
MUOBU also offers their clientele an enviable selection of biodegradable glitters and face gems – plus Crazy Color and Manic Panic hair dyes – and, at now 10 times its original size, the business has grown from a tiny shop into the UK's biggest LGBTQ+ store, with nearly 4,000 items in stock.
Owner explains his payment needs
According to Jason Guy, co-founder of MUOBU, “Our customer base consists of a lot of young people and students, so we do a lot of high-volume of transactions per day, but they can be for quite small amounts. So we needed a payment solution that worked for us.
“We didn’t want to be charged high percentages per transaction,” he continues. “We basically needed something that we could integrate across our websites and with Shopify. Additionally, it needed to be customizable, so it wouldn’t feel like you were leaving our sites and going to a third-party payment provider. Lastly, we just wanted to find a simple, cost-effective solution that worked across our different platforms.”
Fast, reliable and safe Worldpay terminals lauded
In commenting about his in-store card payment machines, Jason notes, “The Worldpay terminals we now use here in the shop are very fast, robust and never let us down. We actually use them at external events as well. So being able to fall back to 5G when we haven't got broadband or Wi-Fi available is amazing. Plus, we've had no instances of fraud since moving to Worldpay.”
Quick and easy Shopify integration
Jason also highlighted the need for a payment system that could work seamlessly with their Shopify-based websites.
“For an e-commerce provider like us, we basically wanted something that was easy to integrate and be hassle-free. With Worldpay, a lot of that Shopify-related work was already done for us, so we just had to incorporate it into our websites, which only took literally about 10 minutes of my time – five minutes per site – to activate. It was very simple.”
Significant savings, plus faster payouts
Jason eagerly underscores cost savings as one of the primary business improvements MUOBU has enjoyed since using Worldpay.
“It's estimated this year we're going to save between £6,000 and £8,000 pounds in card fees with Worldpay,” he affirms. “And the way we're looking to scale the business over the next two-to-three years, we’re looking at achieving additional significant savings in this area as well.”
Since changing to Worldpay, another area of improvement that Jason has experienced is with payouts. “With Worldpay, our payouts are virtually immediate. For example, transactions done on a Sunday are paid out to us on Monday. With my previous payment providers, they’d hold on to the money anywhere between two and four working days.”
Account management support recognized
In closing, Jason readily acknowledges that, “I kind of don't work 9 to 5, so I do tend to fire off random requests and queries in the middle of the night. Even so, anytime I’ve had questions, I've had everything answered and resolved within 24 hours – every time. Worldpay’s account management has been superb, and they’ve been a very easy company to work with.”
