Pub takings set to soar on Six Nations ‘Super Saturday’

St Patrick’s partygoers meet rugby revellers as Ireland go for grand slam glory

London, 14th March 2018 - Worldpay is predicting a bumper weekend for Britain’s pubs and bars, as England take on Ireland on Six Nations ‘Super Saturday’.

Worldpay’s card transaction data from England’s clash with Wales earlier in the tournament saw pubs rake in £3.5 million[1] during the match, with drinking establishments across the UK 25% busier than a usual[2] weekend. Stroud was home to the UK’s most fervent fans, with afternoon takings in pubs across the city surging by an incredible 488%.

Landlords in London can also look forward to a welcome boost this weekend. Sporting fans in Fulham can claim to be the capital’s biggest boozers, splashing out 126% more in local pubs and bars compared to an average weekend, while watering holes around Twickenham stadium were 83% busier on match-day.

Although England have missed out on the coveted title this year, an Irish grand slam win will mean big business for the capital’s pubs. London is home to one of the biggest Irish population outside of the Emerald Isle[3], and with hordes of Irish fans travelling to Twickenham for their final fixture, businesses across London could benefit as St Patrick’s Day parties meet championship celebrations.

But not everyone has been gripped by the fortunes of the home nations. The Six Nations was a bit of a no-show in Nottingham, where pubs actually saw takings drop by 10% during England’s match against Wales.

Although England fans will be disappointed that this was not our year, there is something quite fitting about Ireland going for grand slam glory on Paddy’s Day, and we could see a “double whammy” effect which contributes to an extraordinary evening of celebrations.”
