LONDON – 20th April 2016 – Ahead of the 2016 London Marathon this weekend, data from Worldpay, the global leader in payments, has revealed that the number of online donations are set to treble this week, as runners attempt one final push before the fundraising finishing line.
Worldpay’s figures from the 2015 race show that the surge in donations starts two weeks prior to the event, and reaches a climax two days before, when the volume of transactions increased threefold compared to an average week. Data from last year revealed that friends and family are also at their most generous on the Friday before the race, with the average donation value up to 27% higher than previous weeks.*

Last year, the London Marathon broke the Guinness World Record for the ninth successive year, raising a whopping £54.1 million.**
“Fundraising sites such as Virgin Money and Just Giving are making it easier than ever for people donate online and on their mobile, whilst social media is helping to boost donations by notifying users in the run-up to the event, which explains why we witness such a substantial uplift two days before. With more and more charities integrating online payments, we can expect fundraising efforts to continue breaking records in 2016 and beyond.”
