London, 26 September 2016 – Worldpay has successfully hosted its first Internet of Things (IoT) hackathon at the Impact Hub Westminster in central London.

Over 80 aspiring technologists and experienced coders came together over the weekend to explore use-cases enabled by the Worldpay Within software release, supporting mobile payments in IoT environments.  The event was supported by Consult Hyperion, MongoDB and Visa Europe Collab.

In just 48 hours participants brought to life a range of innovative concepts from building a payment system following a natural disaster to payments apps for the sharing economy.

The first prize of £3,000 was awarded to Pareto Power who built a smart homes concept with solar power and wind power to enable devices within separate homes to buy and sell surplus power autonomously.

The second prize of £2,000 was won by Fit & Fund. Their concept was to design a fitness environment with gym machines which gave you “credit” for your time and effort which could then be paid automatically back to charity.

Team Exe-Bit won the Special Judges’ Prize of £250 in recognition of the outstanding achievements of their two school boy participants. They used an Xbox Kinect to create an Augmented Reality shopping environment.

Nick Telford-Reed, Worldpay Director of Technology Innovation, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who took part and made our first European hackathon such a huge success. We were blown away by both the ingenuity and the positivity of all the participants.  A special congratulations goes to our winners Pareto Power, Fit & Fund and Exe-Bit. I’d also like to thank the other sixteen teams who built amazing things in the course of 48 hours. It was great to see such a diverse group of engineers, designers and marketeers with experience ranging from school children to industry veterans.”
