Access Control Server (ACS) Used by the card issuer during authentication. The card issuers Access Control Server displays the cardholders secret message.

account Unless qualified (for example as bank account), account refers to a merchant’s account with the Payment Service, identified by a unique merchant code. See also: bank account, acquirer account = MID, account type.

account id The unique reference allocated to a merchants account with the Payment Service. Now referred to as merchant code. See also: merchant code.

account pair A test account and production account for a particular merchant.

account transactions Transfers between different accounts in the Payment System when a payment is processed. Account transactions reflect a change in Payment Status, also known as a Journal Type. See also: journal type, payment status.

acquirer A financial institution that provides facilities for businesses to accept payments and receive these funds. The acquirer interfaces between the Payment Service and the issuing bank to obtain a response to an authorisation request.

acquirer response code An ISO 8583 response code sent by the acquirer to indicate a status of a payment.

acquisition currencies The currency/ies accepted by a particular merchant. The Payment Service can process over 160 acquirer currencies. See also: order currency, payment currency, transaction currency.

ACS See Access Control Server.

Activation Request Form (ARF) A form that the merchant submits to the Technical Support Team when their installation is ready to go live.

Address Verification Service (AVS) Fraud-prevention mechanic that verifies a customer address against a card.

administration code A code that identifies a customer or business. The administration code is a key for all of the accounts (merchant codes) that a company has with the Payment Service. WorldPay - Formerly known as company id. See also: merchant code, company id.

administrator The person(s) in a merchants organisation who has (have) access to all parts of the Merchant Administration Interface and who can create users with limited access as appropriate to their role (accounting staff for example or system administration staff). See also: Merchant Administration Interface (MAI), user management, permission, role.

agreement (FuturePay) A contract by which WorldPay processes recurring transactions for a merchant. See also: regular agreement, limited agreement.

anti-fraud measure A technical measure or piece of functionality used by a Payment Service to counter fraud and reduce the incidence of chargebacks. See also: chargeback.

application A program that performs a specific task on the Payment Service, e.g. Hosted Call Centre Application.

application process A process that spans submission of an online application form by the merchant to the point when the Acceptance team offers full assessment of the application.

authentication The use of an authentication service to verify the identity of a shopper.

 

authentication service, scheme, programme A scheme designed to prevent credit card fraud by authenticating cardholders when performing transactions over the Internet. See Verified by Visa, and MasterCard SecureCode.

authorisation code A code (which must not be all zeros) generated by a card issuer or an acquirer on behalf of a card issuer when an authorisation request is approved.

authorisation A process whereby a transaction for a specified amount is approved (authorised) or declined (refused) by a card issuer or an acquirer on behalf of a card issuer. This approval confirms that the card number is valid, not reported lost or stolen and that funds were available at the time of the transaction. An authorised payment can be captured.

authorisation result The result of submitting a payment for authorisation, either authorised or refused. See also: authorised, refused.

authorised amount The amount of money authorised for a particular transaction.

authorised The transaction has been approved by the financial institution. The transaction attains the payment status AUTHORISED. See also: authorisation.

automatic capture Automatic capture of an authorised payment after the defined capture delay for that account. See also: capture delay.

AVS Acceptance Range Specifies the level of AVS accuracy that a merchant will accept for a transaction.

AVS See Address Verification Service.

AVS Result Code The code returned by the card issuer in the authorisation response message to indicate the level of accuracy that matched the cardholders billing address.

Bank Compliance form A document that the merchant must complete and get stamped by their bank to confirm business details. It is a requirement of the merchant acceptance process. See also: application process.

BankDirect The service which is typically taken by companies who have, or are able to obtain, their internet merchant facility from a bank. See also: WorldDirect.

batch A group of orders collectively sent to the Payment Service or a collection of commands (XML requests) sent to the Payment Service to cancel, refund or capture a payment.

batch item An individual request within a batch. See also: batch.

billing address (shopper) The address (held by the card issuer) to which card statements are sent. Used by the Address Verification Service (AVS).

callback The callback is the URL used to process payment responses that are displayed to shoppers. If selected, callbacks replace the standard response emails that are sent to shoppers on completion of a transaction. The merchant can set up a callback using the Merchant Administration interface.

cancellation A process to cancel an authorised, not yet captured payment using the Merchant Administration Interface or an XML order modification. A cancelled payment has the status CANCELLED.

captured amount The amount captured for a particular transaction. See also: capture.

capture delay Delay (number of days) as set in the Merchant Administration Interface before an authorised payment is automatically captured.

capture A process whereby a specified amount (up to the authorised amount) of an authorised payment is collected from the acquirer. An authorised payment is automatically captured after the capture delay, or can be manually captured by the merchant using the Merchant Administration Interface. See also: capture request, partial capture.

card dispute notification An email sent by the Payment Service to the merchant providing notification of a disputed transaction.

cardholder authentication The process of checking the identity of a cardholder online. When using MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa, the cardholder is prompted to enter their authentication password, which is verified against their issuing bank's records at the time of the transaction.

cardholder transaction The use of a card by a shopper (normally assumed to be the cardholder) in order to purchase goods or services from a merchant. See also: transaction.

card issuer The financial institution that supplies customers with credit and/or debit cards for their personal/company use.

card scheme Card schemes, such as Visa or MasterCard, promote the use of various card types which carry their logos. Banks and financial institutions must apply for membership of the appropriate card scheme before they can issue cards or acquire transactions.

card scheme rules Operating rules and regulations set by the card schemes to which all member banks must apply.

Card Security Code (CSC) A 3 or 4 digit value printed, not embossed, on the card, that merchants and others use to verify that the shopper has the card in their physical possession, giving some protection against credit card fraud. There is a slightly different brand per card scheme: CVC Card Validation Code (MasterCard), CVV Card Verification Value (Visa), CID Card Identification Number (AmEx).

Card Validation Code (CVV) MasterCard term for CSC Card Security Code. See also: CSC, Card Security Code.

card validation The process within a merchant terminal which checks whether or not the card being used for a transaction is valid, according to that card scheme's functional specification(s).

Card Verification Value (CVC) Visa term for CSC Card Security Code. See also: CSC, Card Security Code.

cart id A reference number for an agreement. Prefixed to identify whether the transaction was completed off-line or online.

caution (WorldAlert) Fraud screening result, indicates inconsistencies in characteristics of a transaction that warrant further checks. See also: WorldAlert.

channel The protocol used by the Payment Service to send a notification (email or http(s)) to the merchant. Use the merchant Administration Interface to configure channels. See also: order notification, confirmation message, payment status, callback

character pattern A pattern of character sequences used to determine the validity of a card / account holder name.

chargeback A transaction dispute procedure, initiated by a cardholder/shopper, which may result in a credit being issued to the cardholders account and a debit being applied to the customer's account. This may happen for a number of reasons, but most often a chargeback is triggered by a cardholder disputing a transaction, in-whole or in-part. See also: dispute, refund.

CID Card Identification Number (American Express). See Card Security Code. See also: CSC, Card Security Code.

client certificate An electronic document that contains the public key of the certificate holder and which is attested to by a certificate authority and rendered unforgeable by cryptographic technology (signing with the private key of the certificate authority).

card(holder)-not-present (CNP) A transaction where the merchant does not have physical access to the payment card. Examples include transactions over the Internet, telephone, fax or by mail order. See also: CP card(holder)-present.

code 10 call or check An authorisation check made by a card issuer where a merchant is suspicious about a transaction.

collection assistance Provision of documentation (defence material) to the Payment Service by the merchant to support a claim that a chargeback is invalid. The documentation is forwarded to the acquirer who then requests that the card issuer reconsiders the chargeback decision.

Command Batch (MAI page) A page in the Merchant Administration Interface where you can view an overview of the (daily) batches.

company id An obsolete WorldPay term: A unique reference that specifically identifies a merchant. Replaced by administration code. See also: administration code, merchant code.

company number Assigned by the acquiring bank. A way in which the bank identifies a merchant on its system.

completion Obsolete term; replaced by capture. See also: capture.

Compliance Team A team that checks a merchant's web site is compliant with the Payment Service rules

confirmation email An email sent by the Payment Service to the shopper confirming the order and payment. Also known as shopper email. See also: shopper email.

consistency check A fraud screening check that looks for logical patterns in shopper and payment data.

continuous authority transaction Card scheme term for a recurring transaction. See also: recurring transaction.

card(holder)-present(CP) A transaction where the merchant has physical access to the payment card, i.e. in a point-of-sale environment. Also known as face-to-face.

credit card A payment card that enables the holder to make purchases and to draw cash up to a pre-arranged ceiling. The credit granted can be settled in full by the end of a specified period or can be settled in part, in which case interest is charged. In the case of cash withdrawals, interest is normally charged from the transaction date. Cardholders may be charged an annual fee.

CSC Acceptance Range A value that allows the level of CSC accuracy that is required to match the cardholders Card Security Code to be selected.

CSC Result Code A code returned by the card issuer in the authorisation response message, verifying the level of accuracy that matched the CSC. See also: CSC, Card Security Code.

currency code The three-letter ISO 4217 code defining the currency.

Customer Acceptance Team (CAT) The Customer Acceptance Team receives the merchants initial application form. They assess his application and decide whether they can become a customer.

Customer Service, Customer Support Department who provide (technical) support to merchants.

customisation, customise Change the appearance of Payment Method Selection pages and provide result URLs to inform the shopper of the result of the payment attempt by appending parameters to the redirect URL.

debit card A payment card linked to a bank or building society account, used to pay for goods and services by debiting the holder's account; usually also combined with other facilities such as cash machine and cheque guarantee functions.

deferred payment processing A facility which enables the merchant to check a shopper's credentials/creditworthiness before providing the goods or services. Previously referred to as 'pre-authorisation'.

Deposit An amount held in deposit by the Payment Service to secure payment of possible chargebacks after termination of a contract.

digital receipt An electronic receipt frequently sent to the shopper by email.

Direct Debit Authority form UK merchants must fill out a direct debit authority, so that the Payment Service can debit any fees that are due (for example the annual set-up fee).

Direct model An integration model where the merchant gathers both the order and payment details and communicates these on a per order basis to the Payment Service which then processes these with the financial institutions. See also: integration, integration model.

dispute Question a transaction, initiated by a shopper, possibly resulting in a chargeback. A dispute can be based on a number of reasons including card misuse, processing errors and shopper dissatisfaction. See also: chargeback.

Dispute Management (MAI page) An integral part of the Merchant Administration Interface used for automatic communication between the merchant and the acquirer in the case of an information request. See also: chargeback, RFI.

Document Type Definition (DTD) Document defining the building blocks of an XML document, including detailed description of element sequence, nesting validity, required attributes, attribute value type, etc. Defines structure for connecting to the Payment Service. See also: XML.

dynamic callback A process that can change the callback URL each time a purchase token is sent through the Payment Server.

email receipt An email sent to the merchant by the Payment Service when a shopper has made a successful purchase.

end date (FuturePay) The date, if specified, that an agreement ends.

enrollment The process whereby Visa and MasterCard cardholders register with their issuing bank to participate in authentication programmes.

expired authorisation An authorisation that has exceeded the period in which the payment can be captured. See also: authorisation.

expired card A card on which the embossed, encoded, or printed expiry date has passed.

financial institution An issuer, acquirer or bank that issues a payment method to shoppers and/or accepts payments on behalf of merchants.

financial report A report providing details of all payments that reached one or more specified statuses for a particular period. These reports are available in a variety of formats and can be sent via email or http.

Financial Reports (MAI page) Part of the Merchant Administration Interface where a merchant can select what financial reports to receive and configure settings of any financial reports that have been selected.

Financial Status (MAI page) Part of the Merchant Administration Interface that contains summaries of the financial status of a particular merchant account.

fixed data A method of passing information, for example address details, to the Payment Service so that the details cannot be changed when they appear to the shopper.

fixed payment agreement (FuturePay) A fixed payment agreement continues until the number of payments specified is reached. See also: Recurring Payment Service.

fraud prevention Measures incorporated into the Payment Service designed to help reduce exposure to fraud.

Fraud Screening Configuration Service (WorldAlert) An online tool for setting and removing transaction blocks and blocking specific IP addresses. See also: WorldAlert Configuration Service.

fraud screening result (WorldAlert) Appears against a transaction on the financial statement in the Merchant Administration Interface if an alert was issued for the transaction.

Fraud Screening Service Part of the transaction authorisation flow process subjecting transactions to a range of fraud checks, prior to authorisation, to reduce fraud and prevent chargebacks. See also: chargeback.

fraud warning (WorldAlert) An automated warning issued by the Payment Service indicating that the payment attempt may be fraudulent.

fulfillment A document image supplied in response to a Request for Information.

FuturePay id (FuturePay) A unique number that identifies a FuturePay agreement on the Merchant Administration Interface.

increase authorisation An order modification sent by the merchant to the Payment Server to increase the amount to be authorised for an existing order. See also: top-up.

initial payment or transaction The first transaction on a recurring payment service, for which the shopper submits payment details. These details are then re-used for all subsequent transactions. See also: recurring payment or transaction, subsequent payment or transaction.

installation The process of creating the live and test environments for the merchant's web site.

installation id The unique reference number assigned by the Payment Service to a particular merchant installation. The merchant has two installation ids; one for live and one for testing.

integration The process of connecting a web site / online shop to a secure payment system. Several integration methods are available to suit different merchants requirements. See also: integration model.

integration model The way in which order and payment information is passed between a web site / online and the payment pages on the Payment Server. Integration models can be either Direct, Redirect or Batch using XML or HTML. See also: integration.

internet-trader Individual or company who operate a web site from which products/goods can be purchased. Preferred term: merchant. See also: merchant, shop, supplier.

Intershop A method of integrating with WorldPay.

interval (FuturePay) The number of days between consecutive FuturePay payments.

issuer The financial institution that supplies customers with credit and/or debit cards for their personal/company use.

issuing bank An organisation that issues credit card or debit cards for their cardholders. The issuing bank's name is displayed on their cardholders' credit or debit cards. Issuing banks also determine the eligibility of their cardholders to participate in authentication programmes.

language code The two-letter ISO 639-1 code defining the language.

liability The obligation to pay an amount owing. In the case of card fraud, liability is used to refer to the party that is responsible for covering or absorbing the amount defrauded in respect of a cardholder dispute. See also: authentication.

liability shift (authentication) If a transaction has been authenticated, the issuing bank is liable for the chargeback of e-commerce transactions that are subsequently deemed fraudulent (those transactions where the cardholder has denied involvement in the transaction). The issuing bank, therefore, is no longer allowed to pass such chargebacks back to the merchant. See also: authentication.

limited agreement (FuturePay) In a limited FuturePay agreement, variable payments can be taken at any time, within the limits placed on the amount and frequency of payments.

live account The live account processes all actual purchases leading to the transfer of funds and delivery of goods and services. Until the merchant has 'gone live', this part of the merchant account is inactive.

live server The secure server onto which a merchant's payment page files are transferred to set them live.

manual capture Manually initiate the authorisation to collect money from a credit card using the Merchant Administration Interface. See also: capture.

mask Hide the IP address of a specific computer and replace it with an address used for all outgoing network traffic.

MD5 security A mathematical algorithm, designed to create 'digital signatures' that can be included within HTML messages (such as a Purchase Token). The digital signature within the message can then be used to check that the message information has remained unchanged since being sent.

member, member bank An organisation (usually a bank) which is a signed up and operates within the terms and conditions of the card schemes.

Merchant Administration Interface (MAI) The web-based financial administration tool for merchants using the Payment Service.

Merchant Channels (MAI page) A part of the Merchant Administration Interface that enables merchant and shopper notifications to be defined. See also: Merchant Administration Interface.

merchant code A unique identifier for a particular merchant account with the Payment Service. See also: administration code.

merchant environment The merchants IP addresses, used to connect to the Payment Service production and test environments. Defined and maintained using the Merchant Administration Interface.

Merchant Guarantee A WorldPay branded service providing the merchant with transactional guarantee, designed to protect the merchant against 'third party fraud' related to fraudulent costs; for example, stolen credit cards. See also: Shopper Guarantee, WorldPay Guarantee.

merchant A business that is using a Payment Service to facilitate the selling of its products/services. See also: customer, shop, internet-trader, supplier.

merchant identification number Acquirer term: An alphanumeric identifier provided by the acquirer uniquely identifying the merchant on their system. See also: terminal id (TID).

merchant service charge A charge paid by a merchant to their acquirer, calculated as a percentage of turnover or fixed charge per transaction or a combination of both. Usually credit cards are charged on turnover and debit cards on transactions. See also: transaction service charge (TSC).

message type The format used for merchant and shopper notifications.

MID See merchant identification number.

MOTO (Mail Order Telephone Order) Orders where the shopper provides their payment details to the merchant using mail order, or by telephone (including Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems).

MSC See merchant service charge.

multi-currency transaction Transaction where the currency in which the shopper pays differs from the currency in which the merchant receives payment. Enables shoppers to purchase goods and services abroad in a currency that they recognize and understand.

off-line payment method A payment method whose technical specifications do not allow for a payment being processed over the internet, e.g. bank transfer, cheque, direct debit, cash on delivery.

on-line payment method A payment method whose technical specifications allow for a payment being processed over the internet, e.g. credit card, debit card, online banking, ELV (Germany).

open payment A payment that has been authorised but has not yet been captured.

order content Details of the purchased products and services, billing and shipping addresses, contact details, etc. The information held in the order content reflects a standard invoice.

order currency The currency in which the merchant prices goods or services.

order notification A message (email or HTTP) sent to the merchant when the status of a payment changes. Also referred to as confirmation messages. The statuses that trigger notifications are specified using the Merchant Administration Interface.

order pages The web pages where a shopper chooses the products and services that they wish to purchase.

originating IP address The IP address used by the merchant to send messages to the Payment Service. This must match the IP address registered by the merchant using the Merchant Administration Interface. See also: environment.

outlet id/number Acquirer term: ID or number assigned by the acquirer to identify a merchant on their system. See also: MID, Streamline ID, TID.

partial capture Capture of part of an authorised payment. See also: capture.

partner id The unique ID identifying a partner.

payment attempt Submission of payment details to an acquirer for authorisation.

Payment Authentication page A secure page on the Payment Server that enables MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa cardholders to select an option to enroll in an authentication programme, authenticate their identity with their issuing bank, or submit a payment for authorisation only.

payment card A generic term for any plastic card (credit, debit, charge etc) which may be used on its own to pay for goods and services, or to withdraw cash.

Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standard A Visa and MasterCard standard that requires merchants to manage user access to systems, particularly those that contain shoppers card details.

payment container Area of the Payment page in which the payment fields/contents are displayed.

payment currency The currency in which a shopper pays for goods/services purchased with a merchant. See also: order currency, transaction currency, multi-currency transaction.

payment details Information relating to the selected method of payment.

payment history Details of the consecutive statuses of a payment. Visible in the Merchant Administration Interface.

payment An order that has a status, e.g. refused, signed form received, cancelled, etc. Note that a payment does not necessarily mean money has changed hands. See also: order.

payment method code The unique code identifying the payment method.

payment method The method used by a shopper to pay for the goods or services. Selected on the Payment Selection page.

Payment Method Selection page The secure page on the Payment Server where the shopper selects the method of payment for this transaction.

Payment Page Editor The tool for customizing the default Payment Page and shopper email confirmation. The Payment Page Editor can be accessed by logging in to the Merchant Administration Interface.

Payment page The collection of secure pages hosted on the Payment Server where the shopper selects their preferred payment method, submits their payment details and where the transaction is processed.

Payment Result page A page used for a successful, failed or cancelled transaction.

Payment Selection page The secure page on the Payment Server that streamlines the processing of the payment according to the type of payment card or method that the shopper/cardholder selects. Once the shopper/cardholder selects the method of payment for this transaction, they are then passed on to the Payment page.

Payment Server A piece of hardware within the Payment Service that processes online payment requests.

Payments (MAI page) Part of the Merchant Administration Interface that lists payment details and provides functionality to capture, cancel and refund payments.

payment status The status (or position) of an order or payment within the payment process. Visible in the Merchant Administration Interface.

pending The order is placed but a payment result is not available. Applies to off-line payments.

permission Permissions are assigned to roles and provide access to specific MAI pages and tasks. Related permissions are grouped into roles and roles are assigned to users. See also: role, Merchant Administration Interface, user management.

point of sale (POS) A physical purchase location, such as a check-out, till or sale point. Also referred to as face-to-face. See also: CP, card(holder)-present.

post-authorisation Obsolete term; replaced by capture. See also: authorisation, capture.

pre-authorisation Obsolete term; replaced by authorisation. See also: authorisation.

preferred account A merchant account used to process specific payments and transactions, for example sales above a certain amount or to a certain country.

Profile (MAI page) Part of the Merchant Administration Interface that details the merchants profile on the system.

proof of delivery Documentation which assures that the goods were delivered and received at the delivery address. Submitted by a merchant in response to an RFI to prevent or reverse a chargeback. See also RFI, Request for Information.

purchase date The date that the transaction is processed by the card scheme, the date of expected receipt of services or, for travel services, the expected date of travel.

purchase token A file containing parameters that describe the shoppers purchase. The purchase token is passed to the Payment Server for processing and must describe a single total purchase rather than a series of items in a shopping cart.

reactivate (FuturePay) Restart a FuturePay agreement that has been suspended.

recurring payment or transaction, subsequent payment or transaction A payment or transaction that is repeated on a regular basis using the payment details entered for the initial payment or transaction; for example, weekly or monthly magazine subscriptions. See also: initial payment or transaction.

Recurring Payment Service (FuturePay) An internet-based equivalent of standing order and direct debit facilities. It enables shoppers to pay for goods and services in instalments, paying either fixed or variable amounts within the terms of their agreement. Used to be known as FuturePay.

redirect Passing a shopper to a Payment Services payment pages so that the shopper can pay for their purchase.

Redirect model An integration model where the merchant collects order and shopper information on their system and then forwards this to the Payment Service for processing with the financial institution. See also: integration, integration model.

referral list checks A range of fraud risk checks based on stop lists and white lists for e.g. card or bank account numbers, shopper names, etc. See also: Fraud Screening Services.

refund, partial refund An instruction to the financial institution, to return or repay part or all of an amount paid for goods or services to a shopper. See also: chargeback.

refuse or refusal Authorisation result, opposite of authorised: The merchant has not been given permission to debit a particular card for a particular amount. Most of the time the issuing banks provide no specific reason. See also: authorisation.

regular agreement (FuturePay) In a regular FuturePay agreement, payments occur at regular intervals. The amount taken can either be fixed or varied, as required.

Reports (MAI page) A part of the Merchant Administration Interface that allows a merchant to view or download standard tables or graphs in a range of formats.

Request for Information (RFI) A request from the cardholder's issuing bank, following a shopper dispute, for copies of a signed sales receipt or other suitable documentation to prove the validity of a transaction. See also: dispute, chargeback.

role A role enables groups of related permissions to be assigned to users. Roles allow either monitor (view) or manage (edit) access to the settings in the Merchant Administration Interface. See also: Merchant Administration Interface, user management, permission.

RRN The RRN (Reference Retrieval Number) is a unique number generated by the Payment Service for a specific merchant. The RRN is a reference that can be used to retrieve the original transaction data.

Security Code Verification A verification method based on the Card Security Code.

Select Database The main transaction and reporting database underlying the Select Gateway.

Select Gateway The web-facing service for capturing payment information.

session information All information on shopper identity and behaviour relating to one shopping session, used for fraud screening purposes. See also: Fraud Screening Services.

settled / settlement Payment of funds by the acquirer either directly to the merchants bank account or via the Payment Service. See also: transfer.

settlement currency The currency in which funds are paid out by the acquirer.

shop See merchant.

shopper email An email sent by the Payment Service to the shopper confirming the order and payment. Also known as confirmation email. See also: confirmation email.

Shopper Guarantee Guarantees the fulfillment of all transactions made by the shopper when using a WorldPay-guaranteed online store. The Shopper Guarantee is available automatically with the Merchant Guarantee. See also: Merchant Guarantee, WorldPay Guarantee.

shopper An individual or business who is buying a merchant's products or services.

shopper payment information Details of the selected payment method.

shopper receipt A document sent by the merchant to the shopper confirming their purchase.

shopper session checks A range of fraud risks check based on the payment behaviour of the shopper during one shopping session. See also: Fraud Screening Services.

shopping basket The products/services that a shopper has selected for purchase.

shopping cart A piece of software that acts as an online stores catalog and ordering process. It allows shoppers to select goods and services; review what they have selected; make necessary modifications or additions; and purchase the goods and services.

shopping system The web pages at which the shopper chooses the products/services to buy.

short-lived purchase token A purchase token that has a limited lifetime. When this time period is exceeded the purchase token is invalid.

similarity checks A range of fraud risk checks that look for a match between the character pattern within the order details and card details, e.g. mail address and billing address, shopping country and issuing country etc. See also: Fraud Screening Services.

single currency transaction Transaction where the payment currency is the same for both the shopper and the merchant.

split sale Splitting a purchase into two or more consecutive transactions in an attempt to process the transactions separately and gain authorisation for each one and as a consequence for the combined total of the purchase.

start date (FuturePay) The date, if specified, that a FuturePay agreement starts.

start delay (FuturePay) The number of elapsed days before a FuturePay agreement starts to take payments.

statement, transaction statement A list of transactions processed by the Payment Service for a particular merchant account within a specified time period. Statements can be emailed or viewed using the Merchant Administration Interface.

stop lists A range of fraud risk checks comparing specific shopper payment data to listings of data known, or suspected, to be involved in fraud attempts. If the specific data of the payment attempt correspond to that on the stop list, the payment attempt fails the check and the corresponding risk score is assigned to it. store-builder An individual or company who builds web sites from which products/goods can be purchased.

suspended agreement (FuturePay) Status whereby the process of taking payments on a FuturePay agreement is (temporarily) stopped.

tags Indicators placed in web pages and emails that allow for parameter and file substitution.

terminal Acquirer term: a device which allows a user to send data to, receive data from and invoke the functions of a remote computer system.

Terminal Identification Number (TID) Acquirer term: A unique identification given to a terminal. The first part is registered with APACS to identify manufacturer/merchant/ supplier.

test account An account that enables a merchant to test integration with the Payment Service.

test environment An environment used during integration and whenever changing settings. Transactions are not processed towards acquiring banks (see production).

TID See Terminal Identification Number.

transaction currency The currency in which a shopper pays for goods/services.

transaction The action between a cardholder and a merchant that results in financial activity between the merchant and shopper's accounts.

transaction id A unique identifier assigned to a transaction by the Payment Service.

transaction patterns The history of shopper transactions - used by the fraud screening service to instances of fraud. See also: Fraud Screening Services.

Transaction Service Charge (TSC) The charge levied on a transaction by WorldPay, including MSC. See also: Merchant Service Charge (MSC).

transfer The transfer of settled funds from the Payment Service to the merchant.

transfer report A report that is automatically created when money is transferred from the Payment Service to the merchant, detailing all individual transactions in the transfer. The recipient, protocol etc. is specified using the Merchant Administration Interface.

unlimited agreement (FuturePay) An unlimited Futurepay agreement continues until it is cancelled by a shopper.

user (MAI) An individual that has access to the Merchant Administration Interface.

User Profile (MAI page) A collection of data on a user of the Merchant Administration Interface.

velocity checks A range of fraud risk checks based on the number or the total amount of previous payments for a particular credit card or bank account number. See also: Fraud Screening Services.

verification token (CAVV) or (AAV)The verification token (CAVV = Cardholder Authentication Verification Value) is a Visa token generated at the card issuer to prove that the Visa cardholder was authenticated. The Accountholder Authentication Value (AAV) is a MasterCard token generated at the card issuer to prove that the MasterCard cardholder was authenticated.

Verified by Visa (VbyV) A Visa program designed to provide online merchants the added security of having Issuing banks authenticate their individual cardholders and qualify their online transactions for protection fraud or chargeback. See also: authentication, MasterCard SecureCode.

warning (WorldAlert) Indicates a significant discrepancy in one or more transaction characteristics. Strongly indicates further checks are required before the order is fulfilled.

WAS See WorldPay Administration Server (WAS).

white lists Opposite of stop lists: white list entries allow for passing a transaction if specific payment data correspond to an entry on the white list. See also: Fraud Screening Services, stop lists.

WorldAccess An internet-based point-of-sale solution that enables merchants to accept payments by phone, fax, or post.

WorldAccount An account that allows a shopper to make low value purchases in the lowest denomination of up to 22 currencies. The shopper sets up a virtual account with WorldPay, a WorldAccount, in a specific currency and 'loads' the account using a credit or debit card.

WorldAlert Configurator Enables a merchant to specify the risk score to be generated by the success or failure of a transaction against each of the checks carried out by WorldAlert. See also: Fraud Screening Configuration Service.

WorldAlert WorldPay's standalone anti-fraud system, which enhances all current fraud systems that WorldPay and its banking partners use for every transaction processed through its systems. See also: Fraud Screening Services.

WorldDirect The service where WorldPay supply the merchant account as well as process the payments (as opposed to Bank Direct, which is typically taken by companies who have, or are able to obtain, their internet merchant facility from a bank). See Also: BankDirect.

WorldPay Administration Server The server on which the Merchant Administration Interface and the Shopper Management System (SMS) reside.

WorldPay Company ID (WCID) Obsolete term: A unique number that identified the merchant on WorldPay's system. Replaced by administration code. See also: administration code, merchant code.

WorldPay Customer Agreement The agreement that the merchant signs when accepted as a WorldPay customer. Both the merchant and WorldPay hold a copy of this agreement.

WorldPay Electronic Funds Transfer (WP-EFT) A software package which enables the authorization and processing of 'cardholder not present' transactions to the relevant acquiring bank. In order for merchants to process transactions via WorldPay, they have to be entered onto the WP-EFT system.

WorldPay Guarantee An optional service that provides transactional guarantees to merchants and shoppers. See Merchant Guarantee and Shopper Guarantee. See also: Merchant Guarantee, Shopper Guarantee.

WorldPay Select Transaction Management Service. Select is the middleware between the merchants websites and the bank gateway. It is used to capture, store and report on data submitted to WorldPay.

XML, eXtensible Markup Language A markup language for documents containing structured information. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the sharing of data across different systems, particularly systems connected via the Internet. XML is used to exchange payment (related) information between the merchant system and the Payment Service.
