People living in the North East are the UK’s biggest New Year’s Eve partiers, according to the latest data from Worldpay.
Analysis of UK card transactions on 31st January 2015 suggests that North East pubs, including those in Newcastle, could see takings surge by 37%* compared to an average night, significantly higher than the 6% overall rise in card spending expected in UK pubs on the night. The Welsh (28%) and people from the South East of England (16%) were the second and third most likely to go to the pub on New Year’s Eve.
North East residents are also more likely to go out for a meal on New Year’s Eve, with Worldpay’s data showing that the region’s restaurants could be more than 73% busier than normal on New Year’s Eve. Dining spots across the North West will also be busy, with takings up 54% compared to an average night.
According to Worldpay, revellers could spend upwards of £54 million on cards in pubs and restaurants on New Year’s Eve. But if a night out on New Year’s Eve is not your thing, then head to Birmingham where it appears you’ll be in good company.
Worldpay’s data also suggest that New Year’s Eve pub takings across the West Midlands could be DOWN by as much as 12% compared to an average night. Bars in the East of England could also face a disappointing evening, with Worldpay’s data suggesting an 8% drop in spending on 31st December.

“While it looks like more people across the West Midlands prefer to stay in, meaning landlords may end up raising a midnight toast with just a few locals, it’s safe to say that anyone looking to grab a seat in a Newcastle bar should get there early. I’ll keep you guessing as to which option I like the sound of most.”
