Staycation Brits Bring Bank Holiday Boom to Traditional Seaside Hotspots
Data from Worldpay reveals Britain’s seaside resorts can expect a welcome boost to the local economy over Bank Holiday Monday, with Tenby set to benefit the most from the long-weekend.
Analysis of consumer spending patterns around the early May Bank Holiday shows that takings in cafes, pubs restaurants and local tourist attractions in Tenby could rise by as much as 618% this weekend as people descend on the Welsh seaside town.
Seaside locations, including Great Yarmouth (197%) and Skegness (184%) see the second and third largest increase in spending respectively, compared to an average weekend.
Restaurateurs and pub owners can hope to at least double their Monday profit with day-trippers looking to indulge in fresh, local produce, and – weather permitting – a long afternoon in a beer garden on Bank Holiday Monday. It could be standing room only in the pubs around Tenby and Great Yarmouth however, with local watering holes as much as 200% busier than on an average weekend.
Spending in cafes and fast food chains will also benefit from the influx of tourists, with trading in seaside towns such as Blackpool, Bournemouth and Southend-on-Sea set to be around 88% higher than on an average weekend. Theme parks and local tourist attractions can also expect to double their takings over the Bank Holiday.
Away from the coast, businesses in historic towns and cities such as York and Bath will be looking to cash in on the expected influx of day-trippers and weekend breakers. Cafes, pubs, restaurants and local points of interest are expected to be more than 140% busier than normal.
